SPORTS: Oil and Glory | The Kirkpinar
The Guinness World Record for the longest running sports competition belongs to the Turkish Kirkpinar oil wrestling tournament, now in its 653rd consecutive year.
Boys, teens, and burly men from all over Turkey mass in the town of Edirne for 4 days of an olive-oil covered spectacle.
Before each bout, the wrestlers pour olive oil over their entire bodies, and the matches take place on an open, grassy field, with the contestants naked except for leather pants called a Kispet. Most wrestlers use the technique of sliding their hands down an opponent's pants for levearge and grip, in order to compress the diaphram of a wrestler using the kispet's hemp rope wasteband.
